Woman’s Bust

This piece is derived from Ian Norbury’s Carving Classic Female Faces in Wood. I was pleased to receive first place, Advance, Human Head at the North Jersey Woodcarving Show in October 2010.  The piece was also entered in the Showoff contest at the Woodworking Show in Somerset, NJ.  

Some of the reading which influences my thinking Eric Beinhocker, Origins of Wealth. The limitations of economics. Hans Kung, On Being Christian. The beginnings of belief. Kurt Godel, Godel’s Incompleteness Theorem. Why reason isn’t everything.

Smart isn’t wise.

When someone says “that person is SMART”, as a qualification for leadership, I now know the correct response is “but is that person WISE?” To be wise is to understand the frailties of the human condition, and not presume perfection on the part of the led.
