Two pieces, One Work

I had gotten the design for the sleeping pumpkin (dubbed “Rip Van Pumpkin”) from Eric Bunn, who is a very accomplished wood carver and my teacher.

It just didn’t seem right that he should be allowed to snore like that without knowing the impact on Mrs. Van P.

Belief and Faith

I am convinced that all systems of thought and belief begin with a choice, and act of faith which sets the course of directions for the arguments and debates which follow.

The first, and most fundamental, choice is to believe in God.  (Hans Kung)  You cannot create a rational argument that either proves or disproves the existence of God.  It is a question which can be clearly articulated in the language of the debate, but cannot be proven (Kurt Godel).

Woman’s Bust

This piece is derived from Ian Norbury’s Carving Classic Female Faces in Wood.

I was pleased to receive first place, Advance, Human Head at the North Jersey Woodcarving Show in October 2010.  The piece was also entered in the Showoff contest at the Woodworking Show in Somerset, NJ.

Some of the reading which influences my thinking

Eric Beinhocker, Origins of Wealth. The limitations of economics.
Hans Kung, On Being Christian. The beginnings of belief.
Kurt Godel, Godel’s Incompleteness Theorem. Why reason isn’t everything.

Smart isn’t wise.

When someone says “that person is SMART”, as a qualification for leadership, I now know the correct response is “but is that person WISE?”

To be wise is to understand the frailties of the human condition, and not presume perfection on the part of the led.
